To inform future legislation and community decision-making, we build a digital tool that community members and decision-makers with little technical knowledge or resources could use to easily view and explore the geographies of film permits in NYC neighborhoods over time. Our ultimate intention is that by making the data more accessible, the issue is more actionable for residents and decision-makers. Perhaps it will inspire more thoughtful discussion and democratic solutions in the future. What neighborhoods in Los Angeles have high densities of affordable housing and appear to be in need of more health amenities in 2021? This research project examined the location of health amenities in relation to identified clusters of affordable housing in the City of Los Angeles. The analysis centered on two buckets of data: 1) affordable housing units that were developed under the oversight of the City of Los Angeles Housing Department; and 2) health amenities, defined as hospitals, health clinics, and parks within the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles County. The methodology was broken down into three sections: data preparation, decision layer analysis, and network analysis. The framework began with defining accessibility for the purposes of the study. Health amenities were narrowed down into the following three health amenities: hospitals, clinics, and parks. The pandemic was anti-urban. It preyed on our desire to be together, prompting many to speculate that the pandemic was the end of cities. Despite this bleak outlook, something beautiful happened. From formal interventions like NYC Open Streets and Open Restaurants, to informal, bottom-up, changes in the use of public space, the pandemic opened the door for dramatic and creative reevaluations of what and who public space is for and how it can be used. The studio aimed to reimagine what equitable public spaces could be in a post-pandemic world and sought to build upon the work done with the temporary Open Streets and Open Restaurants programs as they transition towards permanence. The studio ultimately arrived at strategies and interventions to ensure public space equity that focused on creating new and flexible typologies called CoScapes, supported by a place governance management framework and adequate financial resources. We attempt to transform the "columns" of the old distillery into the spirit of the space.
